Eberhard Viegener

Eberhard Viegener was a prominent German artist who made significant contributions to the field of 20th century German Expressionism. Born in Frankfurt in 1883, Viegener was a painter, printmaker, and designer who was known for his bold use of colors, brutal imagery, and emotional intensity. His works often depicted themes of social injustice, war, and human suffering, reflecting the tumultuous times in which he lived. Viegener's woodcuts were particularly influential in the development of Expressionist printmaking. He experimented with different techniques and materials, including linocuts and lithographs, to create works that were visually striking and emotionally charged. His portfolio of ten color lithographs, titled 100 Years Of War (1914), is a powerful commentary on the devastating effects of war on humanity. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Viegener was also a writer and a member of various art groups, including the Novembergruppe and the Berlin Secession. He was a vocal critic of the Nazi regime and was forced to flee Germany in 1933 due to his political views. Despite his contributions to the world of art, Viegener's legacy was largely overshadowed by the rise of the Nazi party and the subsequent suppression of Expressionist art. It was not until after his death in 1962 that his works began to receive the recognition they deserved.
