The study of the evolution of the word ‘carrying’ has been rich and varied, providing insights into its morphology, pragmatic history and its socio-cultural evolution. In its earliest form, the term was derived from the Old English term ‘Carian’ which had its roots in the Germanic ‘karran’ which meant to lift or turn. This term was used as a verb and implied a physical action, however during the Middle Ages English derivatives ‘carried’ and ‘carrier’ developed with a more abstract meaning. In the sixteenth century the word ‘carrying’ began to be used to describe the action of conveying goods, news and ideas and was used to refer to the movement of objects and messages over both physical and metaphorical distances. As the concept of carrying has expanded, it has been used to describe the act of supporting and moving something, as well as the act of sustaining. Morphologically, the verb form ‘carrying’ can be further divided, with the active form connoting the taking of something somewhere, while the passive form connotes the letting of something go. The term has also been used in a figurative sense to represent the taking of responsibility.
