Nancy Spero (1926-2009) was an American artist and printmaker working in the second half of the 20th century. Spero was born in Cleveland, Ohio and studied art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, graduating in 1949. In 1950, she moved with her husband to Paris, where she was exposed to the European avant-garde, especially the surrealist and abstract works of Joan Miro, Jean Dubuffet, and Alberto Giacometti. Drawing inspiration from these works, she created her own distinct style of abstract Expressionism. Spero became one of the leading figures of the Fluxus movement, producing striking works that addressed themes of feminism and the body. Her important works from this period include Aleph – Omega (1962), Ares (1965) and The Wrath of Hera (1971). In the 1990s, Spero devoted herself to larger scale works, including a series of monumental banners responding to the Iraq War, titled War Series (2003-2004).
