Adrian Piper is an American artist and philosopher. She is best known for her conceptual art and performances which have explored ideas around race, gender and personal identity. She has had solo exhibitions in museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Piper has also been awarded prestigious prizes, including the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Genius grant in 1990 and the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale that same year. Among her most important works are the “Catalysis” series, her “Mythic Being” alter ego and activist performance, and the more recent “Functional Objects” installations.
