Alice Pleasance Liddell

Alice Pleasance Liddell is not an artist, but rather the inspiration behind one of the most beloved children's stories of all time, Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Liddell was a young girl who lived in Oxford, England in the mid-1800s and was a friend of Carroll, whose real name was Charles Dodgson. The two met when Liddell was just four years old and remained close until she was around eleven. Carroll was known for his love of children and his ability to entertain them with his stories and games. It was during a boating trip with Liddell and her sisters in 1862 that he first told the story of Alice's adventures down the rabbit hole. Liddell was so taken with the story that she begged Carroll to write it down for her. He did so, and the rest is history. Despite the enduring popularity of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the relationship between Carroll and Liddell has been the subject of much speculation and controversy. Some have suggested that Carroll had inappropriate feelings towards Liddell, while others argue that their relationship was entirely innocent. The truth may never be known, but what is certain is that Liddell will always be remembered as the inspiration behind one of the most beloved and enduring children's stories of all time.
