Yamaki Zushi Restaurant is an innovative Japanese dining establishment that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary design principles, earning recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2022. Designed by Yu-Fan Kao and Wei-Hua Lin, this architectural masterpiece incorporates the philosophical concept of Karesenzui (Japanese rock gardens) throughout its spatial design, creating a profound connection between nature and dining experience. The restaurant's exterior features distinctive weatherboard-inspired hardware elements that establish a vintage aesthetic, while the interior space is thoughtfully divided into two primary dining zones: an open-counter area with twelve seats surrounding the cooking station, and private dining boxes. The design employs an sophisticated material palette including cypress, teak, unpainted wood, and Baizou (recycled volcanic ash) that serves both aesthetic and functional purposes, effectively managing moisture and cooking odors while creating visual depth through material layering. The interior's sophisticated implementation of dark-grey Karesenzui scenery, complemented by an atrium that draws natural daylight, demonstrates exceptional attention to spatial flow and atmospheric transition. The restaurant's design philosophy emphasizes the pursuit of perfection that mirrors traditional Japanese culinary arts, utilizing elements such as artistic cement flooring, a fish pond, and carefully curated wooden elements to create a multi-sensory dining environment that seamlessly integrates rough and refined textures, establishing a unique dialogue between traditional craftsmanship and modern design sensibilities.
