Xiang Chinese Restaurant

Xiang Chinese Restaurant is an exemplary architectural and interior design project that masterfully transforms a historic 30-year-old residence into a contemporary dining establishment, embodying the essence of traditional Chinese salon culture within a modern context. Located in the heart of Tainan city, Taiwan, this sophisticated renovation project, designed by Ming Tse Hung, artfully preserves the original structure while introducing innovative elements that create a harmonious blend of Eastern and Western design sensibilities. The restaurant's design philosophy draws inspiration from the 16th-century European salon concept, where social gathering and cultural exchange flourished, adapting this historical context to create an intimate dining environment. The space, spanning 16.8 meters in depth, 8.8 meters in width, and 2.8 meters in height, showcases a thoughtful material palette combining Chinese red brick, Morandi green walls, and custom sand-gold iron elements, creating a sophisticated aesthetic that complements the establishment's Hunan cuisine offerings. A striking architectural feature is the large floor-to-ceiling glass window that faces the street, functioning both as a visual connector and an innovative display of atmospheric lighting. The interior space is meticulously divided to accommodate various dining configurations, including intimate settings for 2-4 guests and larger rooms for up to 12 people, while maintaining the warm, salon-like atmosphere. This exceptional design, completed in 2018, earned recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to space utilization and cultural preservation. The project successfully overcame significant spatial constraints and tight timeline challenges to create a dining environment that transcends the conventional restaurant concept, establishing itself as an artistic space that celebrates Chinese culinary heritage while embracing contemporary design principles.
