Treeplets Public Leisure is an innovative temporary bamboo structure that represents a groundbreaking approach to public space intervention, combining traditional Asian construction techniques with contemporary architectural vision. This architectural installation, designed by Joao O and Rita Machado, draws inspiration from the natural phenomenon of identical triplets, manifesting as three interconnected tree-like structures that create natural archways through their joined canopies. The structure, which occupied approximately 200 square meters with a height of 6.50 meters, demonstrates remarkable spatial efficiency with its cross-shaped footprint occupying merely 1.40 square meters. The design incorporates sustainable principles through its innovative use of recyclable materials, particularly utilizing bamboo poles sourced from building industry scaffolding and recycled PVC fabric from outdoor banners for the triangular canopy elements. The construction methodology draws from traditional Chinese architectural principles, particularly evident in its bracket system that echoes ancient temple and palace construction techniques, where structural integrity is achieved through interlocking elements rather than metal fasteners. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category represents a significant contribution to urban cultural discourse, addressing the relationship between citizens and urban landscape while promoting sustainable architectural practices. The installation, which was exhibited at the Macau University Campus on Hengqin Island, exemplifies three future-oriented possibilities: the revival of traditional knowledge in contemporary design, the transformation of public spaces into venues for artistic expression, and the advancement of sustainable architecture, ultimately serving as a catalyst for community engagement and urban cultural activation.
