Toyonaka3 Residential House

Toyonaka3 Residential House is an innovative residential architecture project completed in 2018 in Osaka, Japan, designed to accommodate two couples and their small children within a compact urban setting. This architecturally significant structure, designed by Shunichiro Ninomiya and team, exemplifies contemporary Japanese residential design through its thoughtful integration of form and function. The building's distinctive exterior is characterized by its sharp, angular walls, which were specifically engineered to optimize parking space functionality while maintaining aesthetic appeal. The structure, measuring 9,327mm in width, 8,190mm in depth, and 7,690mm in height, encompasses a total area of 122.68 square meters with a building footprint of 70.76 square meters. At its core, the design features a central courtyard, which serves as both a functional and aesthetic element, providing natural illumination and ventilation while creating visual connections between different spaces. The wooden structure employs expanded metal screening for the courtyard, offering a delicate balance between privacy and transparency. The interior layout demonstrates a clear delineation between public and private spaces, with communal areas situated on the ground floor and individual spaces arranged on the second floor. This spatial organization, combined with the courtyard's integration of natural elements, creates an environment specifically tailored to support family life and child-rearing. The project, which was honored with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, represents a sophisticated response to the challenges of contemporary urban living through its innovative use of space, environmental consciousness, and attention to familial needs.
