Shelter Pack Post Disaster Shelter

Shelter Pack Post Disaster Shelter is an innovative post-disaster housing solution designed to provide immediate, comprehensive shelter for families affected by natural disasters or humanitarian crises. This flat-pack emergency shelter system, designed by Dr. Hakan Gürsu and recognized with a Golden A' Design Award in the Social Design category, encompasses 12 square meters of living space and can be rapidly assembled within hours to accommodate a family of four for extended periods. The shelter's sophisticated design incorporates essential living amenities, including four single beds, a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom facilities, and adaptable furniture such as foldable dining tables and integrated storage spaces. Its architectural innovation is evident in the elevated foundation design, which minimizes heat loss and wind exposure while featuring angle-adjustable legs that enable installation on varying terrain gradients. The structure employs advanced materials technology, utilizing a composite wall system that combines fire-resistant and waterproof fabrics with plywood insulation layers. Notable technical features include an intelligent roofing system with water spouts for rainwater harvesting and storage, alongside strategically placed skylights for natural illumination. The shelter's compact transport dimensions of 80 centimeters in height, 4.5 meters in length, and 2.5 meters in width enable efficient logistics, allowing up to 12 units to be transported on a single standard semi-trailer truck, making it particularly valuable for large-scale disaster response operations. This humanitarian design solution, which emerged from research into refugee crises and disaster response needs in 2013-2014, represents a significant advancement in emergency shelter design, offering dignity and practical living solutions to displaced populations while addressing crucial aspects of security, climate protection, and basic human needs.
