Sandu Darie (1933-1991) was a Cuban artist who was renowned for his powerful and evocative paintings, drawings and sculptures. He was born in Matanzas, Cuba and studied at the San Alejandro Academy of Visual Arts in Havana. He was the first artist to develop the Pop Art Movement in Cuba and was known for his vibrant depictions of the everyday life in his homeland. His work often featured African-influenced themes, and he was highly respected by his peers and art critics alike. He held several exhibitions throughout Latin America and Europe and was awarded the National Prize of Plastic Arts by the Cuban government in 1986. Some of his most notable works include 'La Fuga', a monumental sculpture made in 1981 for the Havana harbor, 'Luz' a series of abstract oil paintings, and 'Callejón de Los Desamparados', an installation of ten large paintings.
