Richard Varick was not an American artist, as previously defined, but rather an American lawyer and politician who lived from 1753 to 1831. Varick was born in Hackensack, New Jersey, and graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1771. He went on to study law and was admitted to the New York bar in 1775. During the American Revolution, Varick served as a captain in the Continental Army and was later appointed as George Washington's private secretary. After the war, Varick became involved in politics and was elected as the Recorder of New York City in 1784. He also served as the city's mayor from 1789 to 1801. During his tenure as mayor, Varick oversaw the construction of City Hall and helped to establish the city's first public school system. He was also a strong advocate for the abolition of slavery. In addition to his political career, Varick was a successful lawyer and served as the attorney general of New York from 1788 to 1789. He was also a member of the New York State Assembly and the New York State Senate. Varick's legacy is remembered through the many institutions and landmarks that bear his name, including Varick Street in Manhattan and the Richard Varick Federal Building in New York City.
