Prodosh Das Gupta

Prodosh Das Gupta is a renowned Indian sculptor who has made significant contributions to the field of modern Indian sculpture. Born in 1912 in Kolkata, India, Das Gupta received his early education at the Government College of Art and Craft in Kolkata, where he honed his skills in sculpting. He later went on to study at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, where he was exposed to the works of European modernist sculptors. Upon his return to India, Das Gupta began to experiment with new materials and techniques, incorporating elements of Indian traditional art forms into his sculptures. His works often depict human figures and animals, and are characterized by their simplified, geometric forms and smooth, polished surfaces. Das Gupta's sculptures have been exhibited widely in India and abroad, and he has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to Indian art, including the Padma Shri in 1976. He played a key role in the development of modern Indian sculpture, and his influence can be seen in the works of many contemporary Indian sculptors.
