Private Villa Juge Accommodation is an architecturally significant residential project located in the historic Higashiyama district of Kyoto, Japan, exemplifying a harmonious fusion of contemporary design with traditional Japanese architectural principles. Designed by Japanese architect Maiko Minami and completed in 2019, this two-story wooden villa masterfully integrates three distinct gardens, innovative glazed windows, and traditional Japanese Washi paper elements to create a sophisticated living space that responds dynamically to natural light and seasonal changes. The structure's design philosophy centers on establishing new architectural value while respecting Japanese cultural ethos, featuring thoughtfully conceived elements such as a main courtyard adorned with white pebbles, a sculptural staircase within a central void, and strategically placed windows that frame views of the iconic Yasaka Pagoda. The villa's architectural composition includes two bedrooms, two tatami rooms, and multiple private spaces that offer a retreat from urban bustle while maintaining a connection to the surrounding environment. Notable design features include exposed wooden beams finished in natural tones, gold brass and silver stainless ceiling fixtures that complement the metallic finishes in the tatami rooms, and carefully studied facade proportions that maintain harmony with the historic streetscape. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional attention to detail in its integration of traditional elements such as the Ikedori garden viewing technique and contemporary interpretations of Japanese architectural principles. The villa's design successfully addresses the challenge of creating modern accommodation within a historically significant area through its meticulous balance of innovation and tradition, utilizing materials and spatial arrangements that create an atmosphere of refined luxury while maintaining cultural sensitivity.
