Joris Ivens (1898 – 1989) was a Dutch documentary filmmaker and visual artist. Ivens is best known for his documentaries, which often approach the subject matter of his films from a political perspective and celebrate the achievements of labor movements. His works include Rain (1929), a documentary about a Dutch village during a flood, A Tale of the Wind (1938), a documentary about life in Paris, Nanook of the North (1922), about an Inuit man in Canadian territory and The Spanish Earth (1937), about the Spanish Civil War. He was also a cinematographer for feature films and his visual style is characterized by fast editing and improvisation with the camera. Ivens was one of the first filmmakers to experiment with editing techniques, as well as one of the first to use a hand-held camera. He is considered one of the pioneers of documentary filmmaking.
