In-between Lines Residence is an exemplary interior design project that masterfully transforms a compact 39-square-meter split-level space into a sophisticated living environment, designed by Shih Cheng Lo and Min Han Yang. This meticulously crafted residential interior, completed in 2019 in New Taipei City, Taiwan, demonstrates exceptional spatial optimization through its innovative use of intersecting volumes and framed spaces. The design philosophy centers on creating a laid-back cultural atmosphere while maximizing functionality, incorporating natural earth color tones and ample storage solutions within its limited footprint. The residence features a thoughtfully engineered 10-centimeter split-level floor-slab design that maintains an open, non-oppressive ambiance while facilitating distinct spatial layers. Notable design elements include a strategically lowered ceiling to conceal technical infrastructure, full-height kitchen windows, and partially glazed bedroom walls that maximize natural light penetration. The material palette combines Lotos Plaster, Mortex waterproofing paint, timber-patterned tiles, marble, chocolate brick, and steel-brushed timber veneer, creating a harmonious blend of textures and surfaces. The project, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, showcases innovative solutions for contemporary urban living challenges, particularly in space-constrained environments. The design successfully integrates multiple functional zones, including a TV wall, mirrored cabinet, waterproof basin, and custom bookshelf wall, while maintaining a refined aesthetic that reflects the travel-enthusiast owners' appreciation for culturally enriched spaces.
