Guido Van Der Werve

Guido van der Werve is a Dutch contemporary artist known for his multidisciplinary approach to art. His works often feature himself as the protagonist, exploring themes such as death, existentialism, and the passage of time. Van der Werve's art is characterized by its poetic and philosophical nature, as well as its use of various media, including film, performance, photography, sculpture, and drawing. Van der Werve's films are particularly noteworthy, as they often involve elaborate and surreal narratives that blur the line between reality and fiction. For instance, in his film Nummer veertien, home, van der Werve travels to the North Pole, dragging a small sailboat behind him. The film is a meditation on the idea of home and the human desire to find a place of belonging. Similarly, in Nummer negen, the day I didn't turn with the world, van der Werve runs in the opposite direction of the earth's rotation, symbolizing his own struggle against the forces of the universe. In addition to his films, van der Werve's sculptures and installations are also highly regarded. His work often involves the use of found objects, such as discarded pianos, which he transforms into thought-provoking works of art. One of his most famous installations is Everything is going to be alright, a neon sign that he installed on a pier in Rotterdam. The sign is a message of hope and optimism, and has become an iconic symbol of the city. Van der Werve's art is deeply personal and introspective, reflecting his own experiences and struggles. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, and he has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors. Overall, Guido van der Werve is a unique and innovative artist whose work challenges viewers to question their own perceptions of reality and the world around them.
