Costa Gavras is a renowned Greek filmmaker who is known for his politically charged and socially conscious films. Born on February 12, 1933, in Athens, Gavras could have pursued a career in law, as his father was a lawyer. However, he chose to pursue his passion for film and attended the Sorbonne University in Paris where he studied political science and law. His 1967 film, Z, was an international hit and catapulted him to fame, garnering an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It presented a complex political drama that exposed the military junta's clampdown on civil liberties and their use of police brutality. Other acclaimed works include The Confession and Section Spéciale, both of which examine the corruption of totalitarianism. In the early 2000s, Gavras directed Amen, a film about the atrocities of the Holocaust, and in 2009, released Eden Is West, a French-Greek drama.
