Beans Restaurant and Cafe is an innovative interior design project located in Ma On Shan, Hong Kong, conceived as an artificial crystal cave that creates a unique dining environment spanning 2,263 square feet. Designed by Vincent Chi-Wai Chiang, this distinctive hospitality space transforms a windowless environment into an immersive crystal cave experience, employing sophisticated lighting techniques and carefully selected materials to create a sanctuary-like atmosphere for urban dwellers. The design's centerpiece features a dramatic entrance with a simulated lake created through undulating stainless steel surfaces, complemented by 3D-printed gull rocks that capture the organic irregularity of natural formations. A central tree grows toward an artificial light source designed to mimic natural sunlight, with an intelligent lighting system that synchronizes with external daylight conditions. The interior architecture masterfully addresses the challenge of a windowless space through strategic use of reflective surfaces and crystalline elements that amplify light throughout the venue. The space planning incorporates a thoughtfully positioned dessert bar near the entrance to optimize customer flow and operational efficiency. The project, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2020, demonstrates exceptional innovation in commercial interior design through its integration of natural elements, advanced technology, and functional considerations. The design successfully creates a protective and tranquil environment that serves as an escape from urban life while maintaining operational practicality for a busy cafe setting.
