Anish Kapoor

Anish Kapoor is a renowned British-Indian sculptor known for his monumental, abstract, and often biomorphic sculptures that explore the interplay of form, space, and perception. Born in Mumbai, India, in 1954, Kapoor moved to London in the 1970s to study art at the Hornsey College of Art and the Chelsea School of Art and Design. His early works were characterized by the use of simple, geometric forms and vibrant pigments, often made from materials such as granite, limestone, and marble. As his career progressed, Kapoor began to experiment with larger scales and more complex forms, creating sculptures that seem to defy gravity and challenge the viewer's perception of space. Some of his most iconic works include Cloud Gate (2006) in Chicago, a massive, mirror-polished stainless steel sculpture that reflects and distorts the surrounding cityscape; Marsyas (2002), a vast, trumpet-shaped installation that filled the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern in London; and Descent into Limbo (1992), a dark, seemingly bottomless void that invites the viewer to contemplate the nature of absence and presence. Kapoor's work has been exhibited in major museums and public spaces around the world, and he has received numerous awards and honors, including the Turner Prize in 1991 and a knighthood in 2013.
