Air Clarity Air Cleaner is an innovative indoor air purification system that exemplifies the concept of Design Visibility through its transparent design approach. Developed by designer Chang-Yu Pan in 2014, this sophisticated appliance features a distinctive tempered glass shell that allows users to observe the filtration process in real-time. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Home Appliances Design category, incorporates a dual-stage filtration system consisting of a pre-filter and a true-HEPA filter. Standing at 300mm in height with a diameter of 230mm, the device is constructed using premium materials including a die-cast aluminum alloy base and taulman-618 lid. The air purification process begins with air intake from the top, where visible particles are captured by the pre-filter, followed by secondary filtration through the true-HEPA system before clean air is discharged from the base. A significant innovation in this design is its ability to visually demonstrate filter saturation without appearing unsightly, achieved through careful engineering that makes accumulated dust visible only from specific angles. The design was meticulously developed using COMSOL simulation software to optimize airflow patterns and prevent dead zones where dust might accumulate. This transparent approach to air purification not only serves a practical purpose in maintenance scheduling but also provides users with a sense of refreshment through its clean, visible operation. The design successfully addresses the challenge of maintaining indoor air quality while incorporating user-centric features that promote proper maintenance and optimal performance.
