Afra Tafri Restaurant and bar is an innovative hospitality design project that exemplifies the fusion of casual dining aesthetics with upscale lounge experiences, located in a prime location in Kolkata, India. The design concept draws inspiration from its Hindi slang name meaning mad mayhem, manifesting as a carefully orchestrated blend of colorful, casual, and elegant elements. The establishment's architectural narrative begins with a dramatic entrance featuring a suspended drum kit, leading guests through an intriguing tunnel flanked by brewery tanks into a spacious main hall. The interior design employs a sophisticated material palette including black and white stone flooring, red-oxide cement surfaces, and walls finished with cement punning, creating an intentionally textured aesthetic. Notable design elements include repurposed elements such as microphone lighting fixtures, gramophone speakers converted into illumination features, and a distinctive bar counter featuring embedded text cast in concrete. The space is thoughtfully segmented into four major sections through level changes and strategic partitioning, while maintaining visual cohesion through a unified ceiling design featuring four segmental arches reminiscent of colonial architecture. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional spatial planning and innovative use of decorative elements, successfully balancing an upmarket ambiance with a relaxed atmosphere. Each design element, from the beer bottle door handles to the DJ counter styled as a vintage music system, contributes to a carefully curated environment that creates a unique dining and social experience while maintaining sophisticated aesthetic standards.
