Zogan Decorative Dishware

Zogan Decorative dishware is an innovative fusion of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and contemporary design that seamlessly combines hardwood with porcelain or enameled stainless steel in decorative tableware. Designed by Yoshiaki Ito, this sophisticated collection represents a groundbreaking approach to combining seemingly discordant materials, featuring geometric shapes in bright white porcelain or enamel embedded within durable, dark walnut to create both functional and sculptural pieces. The collection encompasses various items including bowls, trays, decanters, and cups, each piece demonstrating exceptional attention to detail in its construction. The manufacturing process involves slip- and pressure-cast porcelain that is hand-finished by Japanese artisans to eliminate visible seams, then bonded to resin-impregnated walnut using high-grade, heat- and water-resistant adhesive. This innovative technique prevents warping while maintaining the aesthetic integrity of both materials. The design overcomes significant technical challenges, particularly in achieving precise geometric shapes in porcelain, which typically experiences shrinkage and warping during high-temperature firing (1200-1400 degrees Celsius). The collection, which received recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware and Cookware Design category, exemplifies a harmonious blend of functionality and artistic expression. Each piece arrives presented in a traditional Japanese Kiri wood box, reflecting the design's cultural heritage while offering practical applications ranging from sake service to decorative display. The project, developed between 2016 and 2018, involved extensive research and collaboration with artisans in various Japanese regions, including Seto, Aichi, Tsubame, and Niigata, to perfect the innovative bonding techniques and material treatments.
