Zhi Lan Sustainable Hotel
Zhi Lan Sustainable Hotel is an award-winning adaptive reuse hospitality project that exemplifies the contemporary integration of industrial heritage preservation with advanced ecological design principles, representing a significant contribution to sustainable architecture within the hospitality sector. Designed by Jinxiang Zhao in collaboration with Haochen Xu and Haige Huang as part of an academic initiative at Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, this transformative design reimagines a former industrial facility located at No. 1 Yingpan North Street, Hunnan District, Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China, converting it into a self-sustaining eco-friendly destination that harmonizes historical industrial aesthetics with cutting-edge environmental technologies. The design philosophy underlying Zhi Lan Sustainable Hotel centers on the concept of merging industrial heritage with green ecology, preserving the original steel frame structure to maintain the site's industrial character while simultaneously introducing comprehensive sustainable systems that create a living, breathing ecosystem within the built environment. At the core of the project's environmental strategy is an innovative large-scale water purification system positioned on the southern side of the hotel, which collects wastewater from guestrooms, restaurants, offices, and natural precipitation including rain and snow, subsequently purifying this water to supply the hotel's landscaped terraces and plant areas, thereby establishing a closed-loop water cycle that minimizes resource consumption and demonstrates the principles of circular economy in architectural practice. This transparent, modular purification device serves not only a functional purpose but also an educational one, visually demonstrating the water cycle processes to guests and visitors, thereby raising environmental awareness and illustrating the practical applications of sustainable technology in hospitality design. The architectural intervention employs an interdisciplinary approach that integrates advanced numerical simulation and intelligent monitoring systems to achieve a seamless union of ecological considerations, structural integrity, and energy efficiency, utilizing a regenerative facade constructed from energy-saving materials that possess excellent mechanical and thermal properties, providing both environmental protection and operational efficiency while reducing the building's overall carbon footprint. The design incorporates intelligent environmental control systems including smart lighting and climate controls that adjust automatically based on occupancy patterns and environmental conditions, optimizing energy consumption while maintaining guest comfort, alongside comprehensive water recycling infrastructure that maximizes resource utilization and minimizes waste generation. Throughout the hotel, lush greenery is integrated into the architectural fabric through landscaped terraces, vertical gardens, and scenic walkways that blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a biophilic environment that enhances guest wellbeing while contributing to air purification, temperature regulation, and biodiversity support within the urban context. The original industrial elements, particularly the steel frame structure, are thoughtfully preserved and repurposed, integrated into furniture design and artistic installations that celebrate the site's manufacturing heritage while imbuing these historical components with renewed vitality and contemporary relevance, creating a narrative continuity that honors the past while embracing sustainable futures. The project strategically occupies a prime urban position adjacent to significant civic amenities including the Shenyang Olympic Sports Center, Shengjing D'Outlet, and Liaoning Gymnasium, benefiting from comprehensive infrastructure and excellent connectivity via Youth Street and Metro Line 2, establishing the hotel as a major node within the urban fabric and demonstrating how sustainable hospitality design can contribute to broader urban regeneration initiatives. The design process involved extensive mixed-method exploratory research incorporating field studies, stakeholder interviews, digital simulations, surveys, sensor-based environmental monitoring, and advanced digital modeling techniques, engaging designers, engineers, and members of the local community to ensure that the final design responded effectively to both environmental imperatives and social needs, ultimately producing a solution that enhances user experience, demonstrates business viability, and contributes to social cohesion while advancing innovation in sustainable hospitality design. Among the most significant challenges encountered during the project's development was the complex task of harmonizing the site's historic industrial character with contemporary sustainability demands, requiring the design team to navigate regulatory constraints, reconcile conflicting production capabilities, and balance historical preservation requirements with the integration of cutting-edge ecological technologies, necessitating extensive research and innovative problem-solving to achieve a design that respects heritage while meeting modern environmental performance standards. The resulting design creates a self-sustaining ecosystem where human activity and natural processes coexist harmoniously, with the hotel functioning as a living laboratory for sustainable hospitality practices, demonstrating how adaptive reuse projects can simultaneously preserve cultural heritage, minimize environmental impact, optimize operational efficiency, and provide exceptional guest experiences. Zhi Lan Sustainable Hotel received the Bronze A' Design Award in the Hospitality, Recreation, Travel and Tourism Design category in 2025, a prestigious recognition granted to outstanding designs distinguished by creativity, ingenuity, and astuteness, acknowledging the project's skillful and creative approach to sustainable hospitality design, its authentication of the designers' experience and resourcefulness, and its incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology, with the award designation recognizing designs that demonstrate strong technical characteristics combined with tasteful use of creative skill, excellent attention to detail, and capacity to provide quality of life improvements that contribute to making the world a better place. The project represents a significant advancement in sustainable hospitality design, offering a replicable model for how industrial heritage sites can be transformed into environmentally responsible destinations that honor historical context while addressing contemporary environmental challenges, demonstrating that sustainability and hospitality excellence are not mutually exclusive but rather complementary objectives that, when thoughtfully integrated, can produce architecture that is simultaneously culturally meaningful, environmentally responsible, operationally efficient, and experientially rich, thereby contributing to the broader discourse on adaptive reuse, sustainable tourism, and the role of design in fostering more harmonious relationships between human activity and natural systems.
