Zhao Zhou Community Park

Zhao Zhou Community Park is a distinguished public green space located in Haimen District, Nantong City, China, that masterfully integrates community service functionality with commemorative cultural elements. Designed by landscape architect Xie Weiqiang and completed in 2020, this 4.6-hectare park stands as a testament to innovative landscape design, honoring the legacy of Chinese musician and Pipa player Shen Zhaozhou (1858-1929). The park's design philosophy ingeniously incorporates the Fibonacci spiral composition, creating ten distinct sceneries that include the Maze, Zelkova Path, Malus Spectabilis Path, Musical Fountain Square, Art Center, Inner Courtyard of Pipa Garden, Musical Theater, Malus Spectabilis Garden, Chinese Rose Garden, and Pipa Sound Wave. The Art Center serves as the focal point, around which Chinese-style courtyards and spaces are systematically arranged following the Fibonacci sequence from south to north. The park exemplifies sustainable urban design principles through its implementation of sponge city features, transforming existing ditches into ecological dry streams and incorporating innovative rainwater management systems for seepage, storage, purification, and drainage. The landscape architecture demonstrates a harmonious blend of traditional Chinese garden elements with contemporary design approaches, featuring orderly arrays of plants complementing north-south oriented pathways that respect the urban texture of Haimen District. This innovative approach to public space design earned the project a Bronze A' Design Award in the Landscape Planning and Garden Design category, recognizing its excellence in combining cultural commemoration with community functionality. The park's design successfully addresses the challenge of integrating dual functions while creating a modern community space that enhances urban cultural identity through its thoughtful incorporation of musical themes and ecological preservation strategies.
