Z4re: The Green Building Residential Building

Z4re: The Green Building Residential Building is an innovative residential architecture project located in the 14th district of Tehran, Iran, that exemplifies sustainable design principles through its integration of traditional Persian architectural elements with modern environmental solutions. This Bronze A' Design Award-winning structure, completed in 2018, features a distinctive ventilated green facade system that incorporates 1,100 ivy plants with an automated irrigation system, creating a natural microclimate that enhances both acoustic and thermal insulation while purifying the surrounding air. The building's design philosophy harmoniously blends local cultural elements with contemporary sustainable architecture, utilizing traditional ghazaghi bricks (210x50x30 mm) as the primary construction material to maintain urban coherence with the surrounding environment. A notable feature is its asymmetric geometric facade design, where rectangular elements are rotated 30 centimeters to create a sophisticated 'second skin' ventilation system, drawing inspiration from the ancient windcatchers of Yazd. This dual-skin facade facilitates natural air circulation, significantly improving energy efficiency throughout all seasons. The project demonstrates exceptional attention to environmental consciousness while respecting the cultural context of its eastern Tehran location, incorporating both horizontal and vertical brick arrangements to create visual interest and maintain architectural harmony with neighboring structures. The integration of natural light optimization, automated plant maintenance systems, and innovative ventilation solutions establishes this building as a significant example of environmentally responsive architecture that successfully bridges traditional Persian building techniques with modern sustainable design practices.
