Yunnan Lijiang Dongcheng International Exhibition Center
Yunnan Lijiang Dongcheng International Exhibition Center is an architecturally significant exhibition space located in Lijiang, Yunnan province, China, that masterfully integrates traditional Chinese cultural elements with contemporary design principles. Completed in April 2021, this two-story structure, designed by Xu Liu, features a distinctive architectural approach that pays homage to the region's rich cultural heritage while serving modern commercial purposes. The center's design philosophy draws inspiration from classical Chinese poetry, specifically referencing Shijing, Zheng Feng, Fusu, which celebrates the harmony between natural landscapes and architectural elements. The entrance hall makes a commanding statement with its towering antique wooden structure and mosaic background wall depicting an abstract landscape, while the traditional sloping roof exemplifies quintessential Chinese architectural elements. The building's thoughtful design incorporates an indoor water pavilion that enhances the cultural authenticity of the space, while aluminum grille elements create a seamless interaction between interior and exterior environments. With floor heights of 6000mm for the first floor and 4500mm for the second floor, the space achieves an impressive sense of grandeur while maintaining human scale. The design utilizes premium materials including Dongde Mining stone, wood veneer, and carefully selected tiles, creating an elegant atmosphere that reflects both luxury and cultural sensitivity. The project, which received the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional achievement in combining functional requirements with aesthetic excellence, particularly in its response to the unique characteristics of Lijiang's year-round sunshine and diverse ethnic minority population. The sophisticated integration of rattan and wood veneer elements creates an atmosphere that bridges ancient elegance with contemporary functionality, making it a significant architectural landmark that serves both as a commercial space and a celebration of local cultural heritage.
