Yukyu En Hofu City Crematorium

Yukyu En Hofu City Crematorium is a masterfully designed contemporary crematorium complex that seamlessly integrates traditional Japanese garden design principles with modern architectural sensibilities. Located in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, this profound architectural achievement spans approximately 12,916 square meters, with building structures occupying 2,924 square meters. The design, conceived by renowned landscape architect Shunmyo Masuno, features six distinct gardens, each serving a specific role in the mourning process. The centerpiece is the Tabidachi no niwa (Garden for Setting Off on a Journey), a modern interpretation of a kare-sansui (dry landscape) garden that symbolically represents the transition between life and death. The garden's composition utilizes carefully selected Aji stone, Shiraishijima stone, and Inujima stone to create a profound spatial narrative where the foreground represents the present life, while the rear portion, featuring a solitary tree among rocks and gravel, symbolizes the afterlife. These areas are connected by white sand, metaphorically representing the mythical River Styx. The design, which earned the Platinum A' Design Award in the Landscape Planning and Garden Design category, exemplifies exceptional innovation in creating contemplative spaces that address the complex emotional needs of mourners. Additional gardens include the Shizume no niwa, positioned near the burning chamber for final farewells, and the Shohka no niwa, a reflective pool garden that serves as a meditation on life's impermanence. The facility's design demonstrates remarkable sensitivity to the cultural and spiritual aspects of death while maintaining a contemporary aesthetic that resonates with modern sensibilities.
