WReuse Laundry Water Recycler

WReuse Laundry Water Recycler

WReuse Laundry Water Recycler is an innovative automatic water recycling system designed to promote sustainable water usage in domestic laundry applications. This environmentally conscious solution, created by designer Angela Granados, efficiently captures and filters rinse water from washing machines for reuse in subsequent wash cycles. The system incorporates a sophisticated filtration mechanism consisting of a sand filter system with multiple layers, including gravel and sand, housed within a waterproof container that effectively removes solids, materials, and impurities from the water. The design features an intelligent dual-drain tube configuration connected directly to the laundry machine, allowing for selective water routing through different processing stations. The system's operational versatility is enhanced through multiple modes including Drain and Save modes, with an integrated pump mechanism that facilitates the transfer of treated gray water back into the washing machine for subsequent cycles. This Iron A' Design Award-winning innovation in the Social Design category demonstrates remarkable potential for water conservation, capable of saving approximately 2,500 gallons of water and 25 boxes of detergent annually per household. The design incorporates safety features such as a monitoring system to detect the presence of bleach or fabric softeners that could potentially affect subsequent loads, and employs environmentally friendly filtration methods that avoid the use of chlorine bleach. The system's development was inspired by water conservation practices observed in Bogota, Colombia, where despite abundant water resources, rising utility costs have prompted increased awareness of water conservation needs.
