Wooden Main Bodies Of Japanese Style Wooden Clogs

The wooden main bodies of Japanese style wooden clogs, also known as geta, are a traditional footwear worn in Japan since the Heian period (794-1185). They are made of a solid block of wood, usually paulownia or cypress, that is shaped to fit the foot and has two wooden platforms underneath. These platforms, called ha or teeth, elevate the foot above the ground and provide stability and balance. The wooden main bodies are designed to be worn with a thong, called hanao, that goes between the big toe and the second toe. The wooden main bodies of geta are usually left unpainted and have a natural wood finish. They can be decorated with various designs, such as carvings, paintings, or inlaid patterns. Some geta have a lacquered finish, which makes them more durable and water-resistant. The wooden main bodies come in different shapes and sizes, depending on the region and the intended use. For example, geta worn in snowy areas have higher platforms to keep the feet above the snow. Wearing geta with wooden main bodies requires a different walking technique than wearing shoes. The elevated platforms make the wearer take shorter steps and walk with a slight shuffle. However, this walking style is considered elegant and graceful in Japan, and geta are often worn with traditional Japanese clothing, such as kimono or yukata, for formal occasions or festivals.
