Wish In The Wind Birthday Candle

Wish In The Wind Birthday Candle

Wish in the Wind Birthday Candle is an innovative and poetic reinterpretation of the traditional birthday candle, designed by Ling Ouyang in 2018 as part of an internal design project for Dongguan GAFA Cultures & Creativity Institute. This thoughtfully crafted design transforms the conventional birthday candle into an emotive object that captures the ephemeral nature of birthday wishes through its distinctive leaf-inspired form. The candle, measuring 140mm in height with varying widths between 1.5-5mm, is manufactured using silicone mold-making techniques, incorporating unconscious design and affordance design methodologies. The design's conceptual foundation stems from the universal experience of making birthday wishes, exploring the metaphysical journey of these wishes as they symbolically travel with wind-blown leaves. This artistic interpretation adds a layer of narrative depth to the ritualistic act of birthday candle-blowing, creating a more meaningful and aesthetically pleasing celebration artifact. The design's innovative approach to emotional engagement and cultural significance was recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Giftware Design category in 2019, acknowledging its creative merit in combining functional purpose with poetic expression. The design successfully addresses the challenge of materializing abstract concepts into tangible forms, while maintaining the practical functionality of a traditional birthday candle, demonstrating a sophisticated balance between artistic expression and utilitarian purpose.
