William Turnbull
William Turnbull was a British artist who left a lasting impact on the world of art with his innovative and abstract works. Born in Scotland in 1922, Turnbull initially studied engineering before turning to art. His early work was heavily influenced by the Scottish landscape and the work of the Scottish Colourists, but he soon developed his own unique style. Turnbull's art is characterized by a focus on form and shape, often featuring abstract, organic shapes that are both fluid and dynamic. Throughout his career, Turnbull worked in a variety of media, including sculpture, painting, and printmaking. He was particularly well-known for his welded metal sculptures, which often featured abstract, geometric forms. Turnbull's sculptures were highly influential and helped to shape the course of British sculpture in the post-war period. In addition to his work as an artist, Turnbull was also a teacher and writer. He taught at a number of institutions, including the Slade School of Fine Art in London, and was a frequent contributor to art journals and magazines. Turnbull was also an important figure in the development of the Independent Group, a collective of artists, writers, and critics who played a key role in the emergence of Pop Art in the 1950s and 60s. Despite his many accomplishments, Turnbull remained a humble and private individual throughout his life. He passed away in 2012 at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy of innovative and influential art.
