Willi Ruge

Willi Ruge was a multi-talented German artist who made significant contributions to the fields of photography and aviation. He was born in Berlin in 1882 and developed a passion for art at a young age. Ruge studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin and later worked as an illustrator for various newspapers and magazines. However, his true passion lay in photography and aviation. Ruge was a pioneer in aerial photography and was one of the first photographers to capture images of the earth from above. He developed innovative techniques for capturing images from airplanes, including the use of a specially designed camera that could be mounted on the wing of an aircraft. Ruge's aerial photographs were widely acclaimed and he published several books on the subject. In addition to his work in photography, Ruge was also an accomplished aviator. He served as a pilot during World War I and later became a stunt pilot, performing daring aerial maneuvers at air shows throughout Europe. Ruge's love of aviation and photography came together in his work as a filmmaker. He produced several documentaries on aviation and was one of the first filmmakers to use aerial footage in his films. Despite his many accomplishments, Ruge's life was not without its challenges. He was forced to flee Germany during World War II due to his opposition to the Nazi regime. He eventually settled in Switzerland, where he continued to work as a photographer and filmmaker until his death in 1961.
