White Z Veranda Veranda
White Z Veranda Veranda is an innovative architectural structure located in the Jinshan Agricultural Park on the periphery of Shanghai, representing a masterful fusion of traditional Chinese garden elements with contemporary design principles. This award-winning architectural intervention, designed by Ning Zhang, features a distinctive Z-shaped concrete structure that serves as a connecting element between previously isolated agricultural projects while providing multifunctional spaces for visitor activities. The design reinterprets the traditional Chinese veranda concept through a modern lens, employing a minimalist concrete structure that achieves both aesthetic harmony with its agricultural surroundings and remarkable cost efficiency at under €80 per square meter. The structure, spanning 11,536 square meters of site area with 397 square meters of building area, demonstrates exceptional engineering prowess with its 200-millimeter thick construction that extends to maximum cantilevers of 7 meters and spans exceeding 10 meters. The project's innovative technical solutions include enhanced concrete formulation, integral casting techniques, and the application of three-dimensional grid systems to ensure structural integrity. Completed in 2015, this Golden A' Design Award-winning project successfully addresses multiple design challenges, including the balance between quality and budget, the integration of traditional and modern elements, and the creation of vibrant public spaces. The structure's folded planar design creates engaging plazas and courtyards within a confined site, while strategic landscaping elements, including grass installations on the south side, effectively buffer noise from nearby highways while creating a distinctive streetscape.
