White Church Urban Public Space
White Church Urban public space is an innovative architectural project located in a central public park in Guangdong, China, representing a significant transformation of sacred architecture into contemporary urban design. Completed in November 2015, this 3,098-square-meter development emerged from comprehensive demographic and cultural research, addressing the modern urban population's need for tranquil spaces regardless of religious affiliation. The project, designed by Kings Lee & Paul Lee, demonstrates a sophisticated approach to adaptive reuse, where asymmetrical original architecture was thoughtfully reconstructed to create symmetrical internal structures while maintaining its spiritual essence. The design philosophy centers on creating a soul-cleansing space that harmoniously blends modern architectural aesthetics with traditional church architecture, establishing itself as a prominent spiritual symbol within the urban fabric. The space features an independent main church complemented by a multi-purpose activity house and reception area, strategically designed to operate autonomously while maintaining visual serenity through interference-free zones. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category exemplifies excellence in urban space planning, combining rational functionality with contemporary architectural language. The design's success lies in its ability to create a peaceful sanctuary within a bustling city center, effectively responding to the community's spiritual and cultural needs while maintaining economic feasibility and local cultural sensitivity. The project's innovative approach to public space design demonstrates how architectural interventions can serve both practical and metaphysical purposes in modern urban environments.
