Werner Jeker
Werner Jeker is one of the most prominent Swiss artists of the 20th century. Jeker was born in Basel in 1926, and his early works showcased influences from the Expressionist colossus, Paul Klee. Jeker was known for his brightly coloured, abstract pieces, renowned for their unique approach to colour and composition. Perhaps his most famous work is ‘Red and Yellow’, which was created in 1961 and quickly became part of the permanent collection of the Kunstmuseum Basel. He went on to produce a series of works exploring themes of transience, nature and philosophy. Other notable pieces by Jeker include ‘Blue and White’ (1965) and ‘Nightfall’ (1972). Jeker was known to be inspired by his dreamlike visions, and his works were often imbued with an experimental quality, a trait that has caused them to remain relevant decades after their creation.
