Wayne Higby
Wayne Higby is an American ceramic artist, known for his innovative contributions to the field of studio ceramics. Born in 1943 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Higby's interest in ceramics began during his undergraduate studies at the University of Colorado, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1966. He later pursued graduate studies at the University of Michigan, earning a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1968. Higby's early works were influenced by the abstract expressionist movement and the landscapes of the American West, which he interpreted through his unique vision and technical mastery of the ceramic medium. Throughout his career, Higby has explored the concept of landscape as a metaphor, creating large-scale, sculptural vessels and installations that evoke the natural world through their form, surface, and color. His signature Raku vessels, characterized by their cracked and iridescent surfaces, have become iconic examples of contemporary ceramic art. Higby's work has been exhibited widely in the United States and abroad, and is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. In addition to his artistic practice, Higby has been a dedicated educator, teaching at the Rhode Island School of Design and later at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, where he served as the Robert C. Turner Chair of Ceramic Art from 1973 until his retirement in 2013. Higby's contributions to the field of ceramics have been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including the American Craft Council's Gold Medal in 2002 and the Aileen Osborn Webb Award for Educators in 2012.
