Waterscape - Memory Of Spring Museum + Multi-Purpose Space

Waterscape - Memory of Spring Museum + Multi-Purpose Space is an innovative architectural renovation project that transformed a botanical garden near Lake Ashi in Hakone, Japan, into a sophisticated museum and multi-purpose venue. This remarkable interior design achievement, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space and Exhibition Design category, masterfully integrates natural elements with contemporary architectural features. The centerpiece of the 420-square-meter space is an octagonal amphitheater, strategically positioned where a historic banyan tree once stood, incorporating a transparent resin floor that creates an ethereal spring-like effect. The design pays homage to the site's natural heritage through its sophisticated use of reflective materials, including mirrors, glass fragments, and metal pieces, which create dynamic light interactions reminiscent of water's surface. The space features specially painted concrete floors, custom-treated steel columns and beams, and thoughtfully detailed wooden elements that work in harmony to evoke the movement and vitality of flowing water. The versatile amphitheater serves multiple functions, accommodating dining arrangements, performance spaces, and exhibition areas, while the innovative use of purple and light blue accents on the structural elements creates a visual connection to the surrounding natural landscape. The design's sophisticated approach to material selection and spatial organization demonstrates exceptional consideration for both functionality and aesthetic appeal, creating an environment that seamlessly blends the memory of the site's botanical heritage with its new cultural purpose.
