Water Softening Units
Water softening units are devices designed to remove the minerals that cause hard water. Hard water is water that contains high levels of calcium and magnesium ions, which can cause a variety of problems, such as scaling and soap scum buildup. Water softening units work by exchanging the calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions, which do not cause these problems. This process is known as ion exchange. There are two main types of water softening units: salt-based and salt-free. Salt-based water softening units use a process called ion exchange to remove the minerals that cause hard water. These units use a resin bed that is charged with sodium ions. As water passes through the resin bed, the calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for sodium ions, which are then released into the water. Salt-free water softening units, on the other hand, use a process called template-assisted crystallization to remove the minerals that cause hard water. These units do not use salt, and they do not remove the minerals from the water. Instead, they change the structure of the minerals so that they do not stick to surfaces. Water softening units are commonly used in homes and businesses that have hard water. They can improve the taste of the water, reduce scaling and soap scum buildup, and extend the life of appliances that use water, such as dishwashers and washing machines. However, they do require maintenance, such as adding salt to salt-based units and cleaning the resin bed periodically.
