Wandering in the Woods Kindergarten is an innovative architectural transformation project that revolutionizes traditional educational spaces through its unique approach to natural light integration and spatial design. The project, which earned the prestigious Platinum A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional creativity in converting a challenging building with limited natural light into a vibrant learning environment. At its core, the design introduces a vertical atrium that runs through three stories, ingeniously transforming the linear structure into a woodland-inspired space where structural elements take on natural forms - columns become trees, and beams transform into bridges. The 50000mm x 24000mm x 15000mm space features a sophisticated spiral arrangement of stairs and slides that wind around these architectural trees, creating dynamic circulation paths and interactive zones. The design incorporates thoughtfully placed tree houses that serve as intimate reading and crafting spaces for children, while ensuring all classrooms receive abundant natural light from dual aspects. This innovative approach to educational architecture carefully considers the developmental needs of children aged 2-6 years, utilizing soft colors and materials to create a home-like atmosphere that encourages exploration and expression. The project, completed between December 2018 and July 2019, represents a significant advancement in kindergarten design, particularly within the context of China's challenging land policy environment, and demonstrates how architectural innovation can overcome spatial and environmental constraints to create engaging educational environments.
