W Plus Hair Salon

W Plus Hair Salon is an innovative interior design project located in a residential alley in the east district of Taipei, conceived as an experimental spatial concept that transcends the traditional boundaries of a hair salon. This 196-square-meter space, completed in June 2020, embodies a sophisticated design philosophy that plays on the Mandarin homonym between haircut and subtraction, creating an intricate narrative of transformation through the removal of unnecessary elements and the addition of beautiful relationships. The salon's exterior features floor-to-ceiling glass curtains that create a seamless interaction between indoor and outdoor environments, while the interior is thoughtfully divided into three progressive layers that express distinct spatial appeals. Upon entering, visitors encounter an indoor green garden positioned on a concrete platform, establishing a natural penetration that conceals the cultivation area. A distinctive cement wall screen, punctuated with round holes, serves as a room divider while creating intriguing visual connections throughout the space. The design, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, showcases a masterful use of materials including recycled products, featuring consistent grey and rough textures in the flooring and concrete platform, complemented by stainless steel work surfaces and geometric mirrors. The space's versatility extends beyond its primary function as a hair salon, accommodating various activities such as exhibitions, presentations, parties, and lectures, while maintaining individual yet harmoniously connected areas. Designer Millton Yu's vision emphasizes sustainability through the creative repurposing of materials, such as abandoned cement pipes used in the outdoor balcony's floating plant area, while the overall cool color palette and sophisticated lighting design create an atmosphere of refined luxury and experimental sophistication.
