Volumetric Display

Volumetric Display is a three-dimensional (3D) display technology that creates visual representations of objects in a defined volume of space, allowing the viewer to perceive depth and view the displayed content from various angles without the need for additional viewing aids such as 3D glasses or head-mounted displays. Unlike traditional 2D displays or even stereoscopic 3D displays, volumetric displays generate true 3D images by illuminating points in a 3D space, either by using rapidly moving projection surfaces or by directly illuminating points within a transparent medium. This technology has applications in various fields, including scientific visualization, medical imaging, engineering design, and entertainment. Volumetric displays can be created using different methods, such as swept-volume displays, which use a rapidly moving projection surface, or static-volume displays, which use a transparent medium such as a gas or gel. The development of volumetric displays has been influenced by advancements in computer graphics, display technology, and human-computer interaction. While still an emerging technology, volumetric displays have the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with and perceive digital content, providing more intuitive and immersive experiences. Fun fact: In the early 20th century, a device called the Fairy Lights was invented, which used a rapidly spinning fan with colored lights to create the illusion of 3D images, making it one of the earliest examples of a volumetric display.
