Volcano Residence

Volcano Residence is an architecturally distinctive holiday retreat located in the northeast region of Santorini, Greece, specifically designed to harmonize with its unique volcanic landscape while redefining traditional architectural elements through contemporary design language. This remarkable residential structure, designed by Pieros Pieris and Stella Pieri, draws profound inspiration from its proximity to an active underwater volcano situated 18 meters below sea level and rising 280 meters from the seabed, incorporating the area's rich geological history and natural phenomena into its architectural narrative. The building's exterior presents as an eroded shell, deliberately sculpted to appear weathered by the region's forceful winds, while its irregular, elongated form responds both to the constraints of the narrow plot and the desire to maximize sea views from every room. The residence's innovative design philosophy manifests in its internal domes, cross-vaults, and an outdoor Jacuzzi that references church steeple architecture, creating a playful yet sophisticated spatial arrangement. The structure employs a distinctive excavated aesthetic, paying homage to Santorini's traditional underground housing techniques while achieving a sculptural form reminiscent of volcanic rock formations. The architects' careful consideration of solar patterns informed the strategic placement and design of apertures throughout the building, optimizing natural light and thermal efficiency for each space. This exceptional architectural achievement was recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, acknowledging its outstanding contribution to contemporary residential architecture and its successful integration of historical, environmental, and cultural elements.
