Villa A Weekend House
Villa A Weekend House is an architecturally distinctive weekend residence located near Hayama, Japan, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, exemplifying a harmonious blend of innovative design and natural surroundings. This remarkable structure, designed by Eitaro Satake and Miki Okuno of teamSTAR, features a sculptural form characterized by its striking vaulted roof and series of continuous arches that symbolically echo the rippling patterns of the sea. The building, completed in September 2023, encompasses a total floor area of 385 square meters within a 770-square-meter site, showcasing an innovative combination of reinforced concrete construction and cross-laminated timber (CLT) roofing. The architectural design demonstrates exceptional technical achievement through its sophisticated use of 7m×900mm CLT panels in creating the continuous arch-shaped roof structure, requiring precise planning and advanced construction techniques. The interior spaces are enhanced by the curved lines of the vaulted ceiling, creating an illusion of expansiveness while maintaining a strong connection to the outdoor environment through strategically placed large sash windows. The villa's design philosophy emphasizes the integration of yacht-inspired wooden structures and bridge-like elements, reflecting its coastal context and Japan's rich yachting heritage. This sophisticated architectural achievement, recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design, represents a significant advancement in contemporary residential architecture, particularly in its innovative use of CLT technology and its thoughtful response to its oceanfront setting. The design successfully creates a resort-like atmosphere while maintaining a deep connection to its natural surroundings, offering occupants a perfect balance between luxury and environmental harmony.
