Uta-garuta Playing Cards
Uta-garuta is a traditional Japanese card game that has been played for centuries. The game consists of two sets of cards: yomifuda, which are cards with a poem written on them, and torifuda, which are cards with a corresponding image. The game is played by one person reading a line from a poem on the yomifuda card, while the other players race to find the corresponding torifuda card with the matching image. The player who finds the correct card first wins the round. The origins of Uta-garuta can be traced back to the Heian period (794-1185), when it was a popular pastime among the aristocracy. The game was often played during the New Year festivities, and was considered a way to showcase one's knowledge of classical Japanese literature. Over time, Uta-garuta became more widely popular, and is now enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds. The poems featured on the yomifuda cards are taken from the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, a collection of one hundred poems by one hundred different poets. The collection was compiled in the 13th century, and is considered one of the most important works of classical Japanese literature. The torifuda cards feature images that correspond to the poems, such as landscapes, animals, or people. Uta-garuta is not only a game of skill, but also a way to appreciate the beauty of Japanese poetry and art. The game requires players to have a deep understanding of classical Japanese literature, as well as quick reflexes and a sharp eye. It is often played in schools and at cultural events, and is considered an important part of Japanese cultural heritage.
