Urban Pastoral Community Affordable Rental Houses
Urban Pastoral Community Affordable Rental Houses is an innovative architectural design concept that seamlessly integrates affordable housing solutions with sustainable urban agriculture in Shanghai, China. This groundbreaking residential development, designed by Hang Chen, encompasses a total construction area of 53,700 square meters with a floor area ratio of 2.5, incorporating multi-level vegetable gardens and community spaces that promote self-sufficiency and social interaction. The design responds to multiple contemporary challenges including urban housing affordability, food security, and environmental sustainability, while adhering to China's carbon reduction policies. Distinguished by its progressive layered enclosed building layout, the project features ground-level rural living areas complemented by rooftop gardens, creating a three-dimensional growing system that ensures food security for residents. The development employs advanced sustainable technologies, including solar photovoltaic panels, pedal alternators, self-generating electricity floors, and self-luminous concrete, achieving an impressive electricity saving rate of 57.11%. Each floor incorporates thoughtfully designed public spaces that serve dual purposes: fostering community engagement during normal times and functioning as emergency medical control areas during epidemics. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Construction and Real Estate Projects Design category, represents a significant advancement in urban residential architecture by creating a self-sufficient, community-driven environment that harmoniously balances modern urban living with pastoral elements. The design's innovative approach to addressing contemporary urban challenges while maintaining ecological harmony has positioned it as a model project for future affordable rental housing developments.
