Urban Green Light Sustainable Facade Installation
Urban Green Light Sustainable Facade installation is an innovative eco-building façade system specifically designed to optimize the micro-climate of built environments in subtropical climate regions, developed by designers I-Ting Chuang and Jeanne Lee. This modular architectural solution, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design category, represents a significant advancement in sustainable building envelope technology. The system comprises interconnected modules manufactured from recycled plastic milk jugs and bottles, featuring three distinct compositions that incorporate solar panels, planters, and LED lighting elements. Each module, measuring approximately 11.5mm x 11.5mm x 10mm, functions as an additional layer of building skin, providing essential window shading and thermal protection for the building envelope. The design employs a sophisticated breathable skin concept that utilizes wind-funnel technology to enhance ventilation and thermal comfort. The installation's development was inspired by the prevalent Taiwanese urban phenomenon of metal-sheet rooftop housing, aiming to address both aesthetic and functional challenges of these informal living spaces. The system's modular design allows for flexible implementation across various building façades, with three distinct module types: Type A combining wind funnel and recycled bottle planter, Type B incorporating solar technology with planter functionality, and Type C integrating both wind funnel and perimeter solar elements. The installation demonstrates exceptional environmental consciousness through its use of recycled materials, integration of renewable energy components, and innovative approach to thermal regulation, while maintaining economic feasibility for widespread adoption. This sustainable design solution, which underwent rigorous thermal analysis using Ecotect software, represents a practical and scalable approach to improving building energy efficiency and occupant comfort in subtropical urban environments.
