Una Corda Piano Acoustic Piano
Una Corda Piano Acoustic Piano is an innovative musical instrument that represents a radical departure from traditional piano design, embodying the principle of form follows function through its minimalist, open-frame construction. This groundbreaking instrument, designed by Davids Klavins, features a unique single-string-per-note configuration, diverging from the conventional multi-string approach found in traditional pianos. The instrument's distinctive design eliminates the traditional furniture casing, allowing sound to travel freely while providing an educational dimension through visible mechanical components. Its structural framework utilizes stainless steel instead of traditional cast iron, significantly reducing weight while maintaining the necessary strength to withstand the 49 kN string tension. The piano's dimensions of 1330 mm x 670 mm x 1170 mm house a sophisticated double-layer soundboard and modified action mechanism that enables faster play than typical upright pianos. This environmentally conscious design, handcrafted with minimal use of chemicals, emerged from extensive research into piano acoustics and material properties, addressing the growing demand for softer-toned instruments. The Una Corda Piano's innovative approach earned recognition through the Silver A' Design Award in the Musical Instruments Design category, acknowledging its contribution to advancing the boundaries of traditional piano design. The instrument's development, spanning from 2014 to 2020, represents a significant evolution in piano manufacturing, offering musicians and composers a new palette of sonic possibilities through its unique tonal characteristics and mechanical properties.
