Typewriter Typeballs

A typewriter typeball is a small metal sphere with raised characters on its surface, used in mechanical typewriters to print letters, numbers, and symbols on paper. The typeball was invented in the 1960s by IBM engineer, Robert C. Lawton, as a replacement for the traditional typebars used in earlier typewriters. The typeball revolutionized the typewriter industry, making it possible to change fonts and typefaces without having to change the entire typebar mechanism. The typeball rotates and pivots on a central axis, allowing the selected character to be struck against the ribbon and paper when the typewriter key is pressed. The typeball is held in place by a spring-loaded mechanism that allows it to be easily removed and replaced with a different typeball. This made it possible for typists to switch between fonts and typefaces quickly and easily, without the need for specialized training or tools. Typeballs were available in a variety of fonts and sizes, ranging from 10 to 18 points. They could be made of different materials, such as steel, brass, or plastic, depending on the manufacturer and the intended use. Some typeballs were designed for specific languages or scripts, such as Cyrillic or Arabic, while others were designed for special applications, such as math or music notation. Despite the widespread adoption of electronic and digital technologies, the typewriter typeball remains an important part of the history of printing and typography. Many collectors and enthusiasts still appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of these small, intricate objects, which represent a bygone era of mechanical ingenuity and design.
