Typewriter Printwheels
A typewriter printwheel is a type of printing mechanism used in typewriters to produce characters on paper. It is a circular disk with all the letters of the alphabet, numbers, and other symbols around the edge. The printwheel is mounted on a spindle and rotated to select the desired character. When a key is pressed, a hammer strikes the printwheel, which in turn strikes the paper, leaving an impression of the character. Printwheels were first introduced in the 1960s as a replacement for the traditional typebars. They were initially used in electric typewriters and later in electronic typewriters. Printwheels were popular because they allowed for easy and quick changing of fonts and characters, without the need to change the entire typeface. Printwheels come in different sizes and styles, depending on the type of typewriter and the desired font. Some printwheels have a single font, while others have multiple fonts, including bold, italic, and underline. Some printwheels also have special characters, such as mathematical symbols or foreign language characters. Although printwheels were widely used in the past, they have largely been replaced by computer printers and word processors. However, they are still used in some specialized applications, such as in the printing of checks and other financial documents.
